Where it is and getting around
Park Circle sits inside the City of North Charleston, in Charleston County. The center of the neighborhood is the circle itself, a park ringed by a circular road. Four avenues run out from it: Buist, Dupont, Montague and Rhett, named for the investors behind the original plan.
East Montague Avenue is the main commercial street, with restaurants, coffee, a barbecue spot, an arcade bar and local shops along wide brick sidewalks. National Geographic put the trip to Marion Square downtown at about a 16-minute ride. Riverfront Park, 140 acres on the Cooper River on part of the old Navy base, is close by.

The homes
Landscape architect William Bell Marquis drew the plan in 1912, and lots went on sale in 1915 under the name Pinewood Park. The grand plan mostly stalled. What filled in came later, tied to the Charleston Navy Yard: most of the houses standing today were built in the 1940s and 1950s.
Expect Craftsman bungalows, worker cottages, mid-century houses and some ranch homes. They're modest in size. Many have been renovated and some haven't, so condition varies a lot from one street to the next. Newer neighborhoods such as Oak Terrace Preserve and Mixson sit nearby if you want the location with newer construction.
The park at the circle
The city rebuilt the park at the center of the circle as part of its Park Circle Reimagined project. Live 5 reported a cost of about $20 million. It reopened in November 2023 with an inclusive playground the city calls the largest of its kind in the world, an all-inclusive ball field and an updated community center and pavilion.
The playground is free and open dawn to dusk. If you buy right on the circle, visit on a weekend afternoon to see how busy it gets.
Navy Yard history
The Navy Yard opened in 1901 on the Cooper River, and it shaped Park Circle more than the original developers did. World War II brought government housing and wider, more practical roads, and many of Marquis's smaller planned streets were erased.
The base closed in 1996. The present City of North Charleston incorporated in 1972. The older bungalows and cottages left behind are a big part of why the neighborhood has seen so much renovation since.
