Where it is and getting around

Wescott Plantation sits off Dorchester Road, inside North Charleston city limits in Dorchester County. Plenty of listings say Summerville, so read the tax bill. From downtown, take I-26 to exit 209B for Ashley Phosphate Road, turn onto Dorchester Road and go about three miles to Wescott Plantation Boulevard.

You can also get in from Old Fort Drive and Patriot Boulevard. Wescott Park on Dorchester Road has three baseball and softball fields, a Ripken training facility and nature trails. Compare it with the rest of the city on my North Charleston guide.

The homes

Neighborhoods branch off traffic circles along Wescott Plantation Boulevard. Builders laid out sections including The Preserve, Markley Grove, The Gates, Willowbrook, Pebble Creek, Wescott Glenn, The Orchards, Waterford, Planters View and The Courtyards, plus D.R. Horton's The Farm at Wescott and the townhome village The Abbey.

Most homes are fiber-cement or brick, many of them two-story, from about 1,070 to 3,450 square feet. The Courtyards has patio homes. There are also apartments in the community.

The golf club

The Golf Club at Wescott Plantation has 27 holes in three nines: Oak Forest, Burn Kill and Black Robin, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan. The City of North Charleston owns it, it's open to the public, and Discover South Carolina reported about 40,000 rounds a year. Charleston Southern's teams practice there.

Public play means outside golfers on the course, and homes along fairways should expect the occasional stray ball.

HOA

The Wescott Plantation Master Association says it covers 874 homes in the communities behind the first three entrances on the right side of Wescott Boulevard. Other sections have their own associations or regimes.

Ask which association, or associations, a home belongs to, and get the dues, rules and any transfer fees in writing. I haven't found an official published fee schedule.

Schools

Wescott Plantation is served by Dorchester School District Two. Assignments go by address, so check the exact property with the district's locator: Dorchester District Two Find My School.
