Where it is and getting around
Harleston Village fills the west side of lower downtown Charleston: Calhoun Street on the north, King Street on the east, Broad Street on the south and the Ashley River on the west. The College of Charleston campus takes up a big part of it, including the Cistern Yard and the Halsey Institute.
King Street shopping is on the east edge and Broad Street on the south. Ashley Avenue and Rutledge Avenue run along Colonial Lake, which was known for years as the Rutledge Street Pond and got its current name in 1881.
History and the homes
This land was granted in 1672 and passed to the Harleston family, who used it mostly as pasture. In 1770 the Harleston brothers got a state act to subdivide it, and surveyor Rigby Naylor platted 162 half-acre lots on 12 new streets, including Wentworth, Beaufain, Montagu, Pitt, Bull, Smith and Rutledge.
Today the streets are lined with historic townhouses, single houses with side piazzas and walled gardens, along with churches, inns and college buildings. The name Harleston Village mostly dates to 1970, when the National Register district was extended to take in this area and a neighborhood association formed.
Historic review and the BAR
The city's Board of Architectural Review reviews new construction, alterations and renovations visible from the street within its historic districts. Painting, repairs and other small work usually goes to city staff, and bigger projects go to the board.
The BAR also reviews demolition of any building 50 years or older south of Mount Pleasant Street, which covers all of Harleston Village. Exact district lines matter for both design review and rental rules, so check the parcel on the city's Historic Districts Purview Map before you plan work.
Colonial Lake and flooding
Colonial Lake is a tidal pond of about 10 acres with walking paths all the way around. The Charleston Parks Conservancy planned a roughly $4 million renovation, starting in 2015, with a more formal landscape around the water.
Low spots on the peninsula can take water at high tides and in heavy rain, and that varies by block. Check any address with the flood zone tool and ask the seller about past water.
Schools
Homes here are in Charleston County School District. Assignments go by street address, so check any specific home with the district's official Charleston County School District lookup.
